Shiboski Selected as RCED Faculty Research Lecturer

rced_shiboskiCaroline Shiboski, DDS, MPH, PhD, is the recipient of the Faculty Research Lecturer Award for 2022. The biennial honor is part of Research and Clinical Excellence Day, which is set for March 3, 2022. Dr. Shiboski will give a presentation on her research as part of the event.

Dr. Shiboski is professor and chair of the Department of Orofacial Sciences, which she has helmed since 2014. She has been a member of the School of Dentistry’s faculty since 1994, including directing the Oral Medicine Clinical Center (formerly Stomatology Clinical Center) from 2001-14 and the post-graduate program in oral medicine from 2008-20. In 2015, Dr. Shiboski was named the Leland A. and Gladys K. Barber Distinguished Professor in Dentistry.

Dr. Shiboski’s research has focused primarily on immunosuppression-related oral mucosal diseases (HIV/AIDS; organ transplant-related); Sjögren's syndrome (epidemiology and classification criteria methodology); and oral cancer epidemiology. She is widely regarded as a leading investigator in oral medicine and oral epidemiology. Dr Shiboski has had a continuous record of NIH funding since obtaining an individual Dentist Scientist Award (K15) in 1994. She is currently the principal investigator of a U01, R03, and UC2 from NIDCR.

A 1984 DDS graduate of the Université R. Descartes, School of Dentistry, France, Dr. Shiboski holds a master’s degree in public health and doctorate in epidemiology from the University of California, Berkeley. In 2011, she was awarded the Excellence in Research Faculty Award by the John Greene Society (the School of Dentistry’s student research organization). In 2012, she received the Excellence in Research in Global Oral Health Award from the School of Dentistry.

Alternating years with the Outstanding Clinician Award, the Faculty Research Lecturer Award salutes individuals who are recognized by their fellow faculty for the overall impact of their research, published research articles in refereed journals, invited national and international presentations, research grants and programs initiated, mentoring of master’s students, doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows, research awards received, and university and community service related to research.
